Loose plot in Jew of Malta by Christopher Marlowe:
Keyword:
superfluous, loose, weak
If an
incident or event is removed and it doesn’t destroy main theme of the play it
is loose plot structure. It is considered superfluous part of the plot. There
are several incidents and events in the Jew
of Malta which seem disconnected with the plot structure. If those
incidents are removed from the play it doesn’t damage main theme of the play.
Main theme presents that Barabas worships wealth and tries to get wealth hook
or by crook. To get money out of the building he takes support of his daughter.
She devotedly helps her father to get the money out of it .Besides there are
some incidents which are parts of loose plot.
First, Slave
of Barabas and his involvement in prostitute seems additional event of the
play. If it is removed it doesn’t destroy main theme of the play. The play
seems condensed with the many incidents in the play which makes the plot complicated
.
Second,
in last he plays games to entangle the governor and Turkish minister for the
sake of wealth which seems disgusting because he shows extreme cunningness.
Third, Barabas also fakes his
own death and escapes to find Calymath. Barabas tells the Turkish leader how
best to storm the town. Following this event and the capture of Malta by the
Turkish forces, Barabas is made governor, and Calymath prepares to leave.
However, fearing for his own life and the security of his office, he plays
another trick.
Forth,
Barabas sends for Ferneze. Barabas tells him that he will free Malta from
Turkish rule and kill Calymath in exchange for a large amount of money. Ferneze
agrees and Barabas invites Calymath to a feast at his home.
There
are some incidents which leaves no big effect on the main theme of the play if
those incidents are removed or deleted from the text. So they can be called
part of the loose plot structure.
