Characterization
in Dr Faustus by Christopher Marlowe:
Keywords: Hollow, Weak, Mediocre
Dr
Faustus, a scholar is decreased into a common man. He is famous and learned
person who is doomed to hell. There is completely difference between Dr Faustus
who is scholar and a common man who is slave of his materialistic wishes and
desires. There are several aspects which make him a hollow person.
A scholar is a man of knowledge and
learning. He is mentally strong enough to find out new things. He searches,
researches, invents and discovers new things and new horizons. But a common man
is hollow inside while outside, he commits showy things as to make jokes, to
make tricks, laugh at minor things and cheat to the horse dealer for the sake
of petty profit. He has lost his self-respect in his eyes.
He is weak and has no link with the scholar
and learned person or with the man who has earned name and fame as a scholar.
He is a scholar when first act opens and by the passage of time he transferred
into mediocre man gradually. He becomes the person who enjoys in making tricks
and who laughs at others. He is weak who has no self- control or who is
helpless before the contract done by Lucifer. He has no grip over him. He repents;
he cries and commits low things.
Eventually
character of Dr Faustus becomes hollow who is crying, who is helpless or who is
feared on getting the hopeful images by good angel. He becomes worried on getting
the angry impressions by evil angel. A time was when he was the proud of the
Germany and in the end he is a low person who is crying for help but remains disappointed.
It is
human thinking which makes him a scholar or a petty person accordingly.
He is
not stronger in his will and skill, both are not in his control.
